The largest building in the South of Market area now seems to be the
new Paramount at Third and Mission, which was completed since I was last
there. It's really tall, especially for San Francisco, where zoning and
seismic safety requirements keep buildings well below what you'd expect
in New York or Chicago.
It's a luxury apartment complex, and I bet the apartments will
extremely expensive. Maybe Northern California wants to be Eastern
New York.
Kevin reminded me about the following A. E. Housman poem:
When I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
"Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies,
But keep your fancy free."
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.
When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
"The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
'Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue."
And I am two-and-twenty
And oh, 'tis true, 'tis true.
There was a memorial service for Christoffer today out in Western
Massachusetts. I didn't make it. But at the moment the service started,
I started to cry; at the time, I thought I was crying about something
else. Afterward, I realized what time I'd begun crying.
"Hey, weren't you in my H54 class?"
"Those are my Selfish Socks!"
I had a fantastic turn-out at my party on Saturday evening -- it was
redesignated so as to be just a birthday party, rather than the
original joint birthday/housewarming.
About 15 friends and relatives came by and stayed for four to seven hours;
we had lots of food and some very geeky party activities. Bill Schoolcraft
even brought balloons!
Thanks, everybody. That was wonderful.
A lot of people have a cold; I hope they get better soon.
Cleaning (rather than typing) and being with so many friends seemed to make
my arms feel better.
